A TRIBUTE TO A CAT

        If we live on when Death has closed a door,
How shall the cat who loved us live no more?
For if "Soul" is the Force we love with, say,
Then who loves more than cats in their brief stay?
And if God's Heaven harbors righteousness,
And love and faith and courage, I confess
I find these virtues thriving royally
In cats who serve their gods so loyally.

          And so, my faithful friend, I feel that you,
Somewhere out there beyond the sky's cool blue,
Are waiting to be cuddled to my heart,
When we shall meet again and never part;
That your loud purr will gladly welcome me
When I arrive at last, and we are free
To roam through uplands and along the shore
Or play - or rest - contented forevermore!
